Carving
My love for carving has grown out of creating woodcuts that I design and carve to make art prints.  Recently I have introduced carved elements into frames for my oil paintings; and I create art works that feature carved work exclusively.  The texture and richness of the carving has been a monumental addition to my artistic output and process.

The carving process offers me a means of expression full of warmth and texture.  The key to carving is the sharpness of your tools and the placement and motion of your hands related to those tools.  This fundamental technique once well practiced allows you to unlock so many wonderful and expressive designs in the wood.

One of my motivations for teaching myself how to carve was to emulate some of the amazing Art Noveau (design period typically thought to have peaked in the period between 1890-1910) motifs I had admired for so many years.

Often these carved elements would adorn beautiful marquetry panels all within the same piece of furniture.  The effect is so sensual and rich and a profound celebration of the designer and cabinetmaker’s love of nature. Adding the carved elements to the handmade frames I build with and for my paintings is a nod to this very elegant movement in design.
